Wise Water Management in the West

Illustration of water treatment facilities, digital technology, and connected communities, representing intelligent water management

From our Guest Editor

Welcome to this issue of TetraVerse, “Wise Water Management in the West,” where we explore the strategies, technologies, and partnerships used to help utilities and communities build more resilient water systems in the face of evolving challenges.

Water utilities in the Front Range are balancing a range of priorities—from upgrading aging infrastructure and improving water quality to addressing growing water scarcity and population pressures on water systems. That work is taking on greater urgency as the Colorado River system, which supplies water to nearly 40 million people, is at its lowest levels in seven decades.

In this issue, you’ll find insights on advanced wastewater treatment and water resiliency, emerging water treatment technologies, and strategies for integrating digital tools into facility master planning to optimize plant operations. We explore practical approaches to address evolving regulations, aging infrastructure, population growth, and increasing demands on water systems in the Front Range.

At Tetra Tech, we work alongside our clients to address these challenges through innovative treatment solutions, water reuse strategies, and data-driven decision-making. Our teams bring together technical expertise, digital innovation, and a deep understanding of local and regional water issues to help communities build sustainable water systems for the future.

Lauren Springer, U.S. Infrastructure Division President

Is this the new playbook for utilities?

A conversation with Amanda Smokoff, wastewater practice lead

Colorado’s Front Range utilities are in their “do more with less” era—balancing aging infrastructure, rapid growth, and tighter regulations all at once. Amanda Smokoff breaks down how smarter planning, process modeling, and the right tech choices are helping them level up performance and build wastewater systems for the future.

Optimizing wastewater treatment in Wyoming

Utilities are always looking for smarter ways to modernize wastewater treatment and squeeze more out of the infrastructure they already have. Tetra Tech supported the City of Laramie to reduce plant energy consumption by 64 percent—more than 3x the original savings goal. Learn how the City transformed its wastewater treatment plant into a regional model for energy efficiency.

Why is everyone talking about advanced water treatment?

A conversation with Jarrett Kinslow, U.S. water practice leader

Advanced water treatment is having a moment and Jarrett Kinslow tells us how it can be applied in the Front Range. Think resilient drinking water solutions, membrane and desalination technology, and advances in emerging contaminant treatments. Learn how Tetra Tech experts help utilities turn major water challenges into real wins.

Rethinking facility master planning

How can utilities stay ahead when priorities keep shifting? Deena Davidson explores how adaptive facility planning and digital tools help utilities reduce risk, prioritize investments, and make confident infrastructure decisions as conditions evolve. See how our adaptive planning approach helps utilities turn uncertainty into opportunity.
