MEP Design for Tier III Data Center with 27.2 MW of Critical Load

A long hallway with data processors
Tetra Tech provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design services, as well as energy analysis and construction administration support for the addition of eight new Tier III data halls that are contained within four cluster facilities for a confidential client.

Challenge

Working under an aggressive construction schedule, Glumac, part of the Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group, completed successful delivery of the project design documents using Revit Level 300. We committed to an approach that enabled our team to adhere to the schedule by going directly to the detailed design phase and then jumping straight into construction documents after a single design review.

Solution

The single building facility includes administrative office areas, a loading dock, and ancillary support spaces totaling approximately 377,800 square feet of total area supporting approximately 27.2 megawatts (MW) of critical load. The ultimate data hall power and cooling design is distributed across eight clusters, each containing two data halls at a critical load density of 1.7 MW per data hall in a tier 3 configuration. Critical cooling is provided completely by a direct evaporative system with no refrigerant-based cooling.
