Tetra Tech, along with our partner Egis, worked with Donegal County Council to develop plans for a major transportation improvement project.
The TEN-T Priority Route Improvement Project is a targeted intervention to three sections of the TEN-T / national road network in Donegal. This intervention includes online improvements and upgrades, the bypass of three urban centres, route realignment, and a substantial, segregated active travel network.
The project – one of regional and national importance – represents a government investment of €800m. It is the single greatest investment in transport infrastructure in the modern history of Donegal and the northwest, and it is a vital project for its future growth and development.
Tetra Tech supported the development of the project from its early route corridor selection to the current development application. The project improves three priority sections of Donegal’s national road network and will provide long-awaited traffic relief for three urban areas, Letterkenny, Ballybofey/Stranorlar and Lifford, and greater access and connectivity to Northern Ireland and northwest Donegal.
The project also includes significant active travel provision with over 60km of new integrated active travel network as well as transport hubs at key locations for transition between different transport modes.
The Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) and Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) for the project have been issued to An Coimisiún Pleanála, with notifications published in national and local newspapers on Thursday, 14th May 2026. Tetra Tech looks forward to supporting Donegal County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) throughout the remainder of the planning process.
