Strengthening Secure Communications Systems Engineering for Defence in Australia

RPS, A Tetra Tech Company is helping the Australian Government’s Department of Defence modernise secure communications capability through embedded systems engineering, engineering management, and technical governance.

Challenge

A Defence communications and information assurance program office required experienced systems engineering support for a long-term communications security remediation program. The program supports the ongoing availability and resilience of secure communications capability across Defence by addressing technical modernisation across selected communications and information assurance systems.

Secure communications programs operate in complex technical, operational, and governance environments. System changes must be carefully defined, assured, integrated, and accepted so capability can continue to support Defence operations. The program required practical engineering leadership across requirements definition, technical governance, certification, safety, risk, verification, acceptance, and assurance activities while maintaining traceability, interoperability, configuration control, and long-term capability outcomes.

Solution

Tetra Tech provides embedded systems engineering and engineering management support across the program lifecycle.

The team supports requirements definition and traceability, technical planning, risk management, verification and acceptance activities, and advice on system milestones and delivery phases. This includes developing and supporting core technical and engineering artefacts, including functional performance, operational concept, systems engineering management, certification, safety, and technical risk documentation.

Working closely with Defence stakeholders, Tetra Tech supports program office working groups, chairs groups across multiple program offices, and advises on program-level technical direction. This approach helps align deliverables, management plans, and assurance activities while connecting technical detail with the governance and decision-making needed to progress delivery.

The team also contributes to broader strategic objectives by helping Defence understand emerging technologies, market capability, and future technical considerations relevant to secure communications.

Benefits

  • Strengthened secure communications technical governance
  • Improved requirements traceability across program phases
  • Supported certification, safety, verification, and acceptance
  • Provided engineering continuity for long-term remediation
  • Informed future secure communications technology planning
