Expanding and Sustaining Water and Sanitation Services in Tanzania

Tetra Tech is helping strengthen and improve Tanzanian-led systems responsible for the provision and governance of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services.

Tanzania’s economy, food security, and the health of its citizens significantly depend on sustainably managed water resources. However, water scarcity challenges are growing along with the impacts of climate change. Water catchment degradation, population pressure, and urbanization are moving access to reliable, safe drinking water and sanitation services beyond the reach of many people.

Benefits

  • Sustaining and improving access to basic drinking water services
  • Mobilizing more than $10 million for targeted WASH sectors
  • Improving household sanitation facilities in target districts by 25 percent
  • Providing more than 250,000 people with improved water resources management

Through the Maji na Usafi Mazingira (USAID/MUM) project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Tetra Tech supports the achievement of reliable WASH services in Tanzania. The project builds on the strong foundation laid by the Water Resources Integration Development Initiative (WARIDI), a predecessor program implemented by Tetra Tech. USAID/MUM works directly with national, regional, and district stakeholders in 10 districts to improve the planning, financing, and implementation of WASH and water resources management services through Tanzanian-led systems.

Tetra Tech is working collaboratively with Tanzanian institutions, including the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), water supply and sanitation authorities, local government authorities, community-based water supply organizations, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to expand and sustain WASH services by:

  • Increasing access to sustainable water services by designing and implementing new water supply schemes
  • Expanding financing for WASH services
  • Bolstering the market for sanitation and promoting hygiene products and services
  • Strengthening the capacity of Basin Water Boards and Water User Associations to enhance water resource stewardship
  • Engaging key private sector actors, including financial institutions and micro, small, and medium enterprises

USAID/MUM is integrating gender empowerment and youth engagement to increase the meaningful participation of women and youth in the WASH sector. It is also raising awareness of climate change impacts by integrating climate change education into training programs. USAID/MUM supports the Ministry of Water and Basin Water Boards to design, produce, and distribute targeted communication and marketing campaigns to raise awareness and drive behavior change in the protection and conservation of water resources.
