Tetra Tech Digital Systems designed and delivered a modern airport management system (AMS) for Sydney Airport, integrating more than 630 field devices across three terminals with zero operational downtime.
Sydney Airport is Australia’s largest airport, handling more than 40 million passengers per year. Its legacy AMS has grown organically over time, resulting in varied operator interfaces, inconsistent alarm configurations, and limited visibility across critical assets. Migrating this live, mission-critical system to a modern platform in an around-the-clock operational environment introduced significant complexity. The project required zero downtime, integration of a large and diverse field device estate across multiple communication protocols, and strict alignment with cybersecurity standards.
Sydney Airport needed a trusted partner with proven knowledge of its infrastructure and operations. Our team brought more than a decade of preventative and reactive maintenance experience at the airport and backed by hourly remote support, making us well placed to deliver a complex, live environment migration.
We integrated assets across all three terminals into a single, scalable AMS to give decision-makers complete real-time visibility across the airport. The system connects high-voltage systems, pump stations, aerobridges, car parks, lifts, escalators, energy meters, distribution boards, pollution gates, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units, and lighting spanning more than 45,000 tags and over 400 programmable logic controllers (PLC) with capacity to expand as requirements evolve.
With everything unified in one platform, key vitals—including runtime, power usage, and battery life for machinery across the entire airport—are now visible, enabling enhanced predictive maintenance. Deidentified vehicle and pedestrian monitoring across the car park and Terminal 1 extends situational awareness further across the facility.
