Customizing Ignition SCADA Deployment for a Leading Independent Energy Company

The Tetra Tech Digital Systems Group transformed a legacy SCADA system into a unified enterprise platform that enabled intelligent field operations with a scalable and robust operational technology platform.

A leading independent energy company in Texas and Louisiana used a legacy SCADA system that lacked features to support operational growth and accounting workflows. They required an open, flexible Internet of Things (IoT) platform to future-proof its technology and enable rapid production-team transitions during ongoing operational changes. Frequent configuration updates made manual tag-level maintenance impractical, so the system needed automatic change detection and rapid alerts, and a live, mobile interface matching desktop overview and drill-down detail.

Our experts deployed a customized enterprise Ignition SCADA system to provide a consistent, device-scale user experience and robust data integration. Using Ignition Perspective, we implemented persistent filters so users could preserve selections while navigating between screens to evaluate situations and decide on actions. Map integration with Apple Maps and Google Maps enabled mobile users to identify facilities and obtain directions from their current location. The map overview offered map and satellite views for situational awareness, while GPS pins linked to the alarm screen and changed from blue to red for active alarms, giving field operators immediate visibility of nearby issues. We delivered a custom alarm screen with a key performance indicator (KPI) dashboard and standardized alarm schemas, and connected field routes to Ignition Rosters to create a low-maintenance, adaptable notification roster.

Tetra Tech used Power Chart to create global trending docks for tag selection, annotation, and export. We built an XY chart-based dynagraph card viewer that displays controller pump off/on cards so operators visualize pumping conditions and shut-in wells when necessary. We used Ignition Reporting and SQL Bridge Modules to integrate SCADA with the client’s accounting system so jobs run automatically without interrupting real-time data flows or the Historian. We tested multiple OLE for Process Control (OPC) polling engines and selected Autosol Communication Manager to develop drivers, patches, and tests that validated and verified every data point.

Benefits

  • Replaced legacy SCADA with Ignition enterprise platform
  • Delivered mobile and desktop perspective views with consistent functionality
  • Automated accounting integration via Ignition Reporting and SQL Bridge modules
