Tetra Tech conducted acoustics, noise, and vibration consultancy to support the transformation of a former shopping centre in Northampton into the STACK leisure destination.
Challenge
The development is in the centre of Northampton, surrounded by several residential receptors that we considered in the assessment. We used sophisticated three-dimensional noise modelling software, SoundPLAN, to assess the potential adverse noise impact on these sensitive receptors. The assessment evaluated noise break-out from the development and noise from the open balcony areas affecting the surrounding receptors.
Additionally, with a future House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) located directly to the north and sharing a party wall, we calculated potential noise transfer through the common wall using the sound insulation software, Insul.
Solution
Our acoustic impact assessment identified the need to implement noise mitigation measures to control the noise emissions when received at the nearby residential receptors. These control measures included implementing a computer-controlled loudspeaker management system for the venue, this system will be used to limit the level of music where it is not needed, but increase it where it is needed. Further, the system can be used to limit particular troublesome frequencies.
In addition, we recommended the implementation of a noise management plan. These measures aligned with similar developments operated by STACK.
