Laura Jackson Pugh, head of project management, and Max Daley, assistant projet manager, provide insight into their roles at Tetra Tech.
In this joint interview, we asked Laura and Max to share their experience on projects, what makes Tetra Tech different, and the support they’ve received in their careers.
How did you get into project management?
Laura: I studied architecture at university and have always respected how the entirety of a project comes together. With a technical background it has helped me to understand both the client requirements and the need for the management across the design team. This really inspired me to progress into Project Management to deliver project excellence.
What does your day-to-day job involve?
Max: Coordinating the project disciplines, such as architecture, quantity surveying and engineering, with the primary contractor team to work collaboratively to deliver the project’s outputs, outcomes, and benefits. On a day-to-day basis, this involves communications management, working hand-in-hand with the commercial team and Project Manager to implement the change control process, maintaining regular invoicing, resolving issues, and undertaking regular reporting on progress and financial matters, which involves issuing reports directly to the sponsor / senior responsible owner.
What has been your most interesting project to work on through your Tetra Tech career?
Laura: The most interesting project I have worked on has to be the demolition of an absorber tower that caught fire and suffered significant structural damage. The added complexity was the demolition was being undertaken whilst the coal power plant was still live. We used innovative techniques to ensure the safe removal of the absorber tower. The project was a success due to the team’s engagement with the site, the client and all stakeholders.
What do you think sets our Project Management capabilities apart from our competitors?
Max: We are differentiated by our Leading with Science® approach to provide innovative technical solutions to our clients. Our commitment to quality, safety, and risk management is at the forefront of every project, no matter the size. We measure our performance and take client satisfaction seriously. We hold our suppliers and partners to the same standards and expectations that we adhere to and operate as a multi-disciplinary organisation, meaning that the relationships with key subject matter experts are already in place, fostering better collaboration and communication from the offset.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself when you first started at Tetra Tech?
Max: To continually ask questions. As we work in such a diverse environment, where projects are constantly changing, I have found it paramount to ask for clarification even when you think the subject is something you should already be aware of. Ensuring you are working with the most up-to-date information prevents mistakes further down the line.
How has Tetra Tech supported you in your career?
Laura: Tetra Tech has allowed me to gain Chartered Professional status and supported me through my NEC4 Accreditation. I started at Tetra Tech as a consultant Project Manager so Tetra Tech has assisted me in my own personal growth to step into my role as Director and Head of PM Profession.
