Developing Advanced Works for MetroLink, Ireland

Tetra Tech is delivering the Advance Works Design Programme for the MetroLink rail project in Ireland, linking Dublin Airport, city centre and Greater Dublin Area.

MetroLink is one of the key projects identified in Ireland’s National Development Plan. It will be a first-of-a-kind public transport infrastructure project in Ireland, with much of the 18.8km route running underground.

The project will link Dublin Airport, Irish Rail, Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART), Dublin Bus and Luas services, linking major transport hubs and key destinations in the city centre. It is estimated to carry up to 53 million passengers annually.

Challenge

MetroLink differs from other rail services currently available in Ireland (DART, InterCity and Luas) in that it will:

  • Offer higher frequency services
  • Carry more people over shorter distances
  • Be fully segregated from all other road users
  • Be fully automated

The proposal for a metro system for Dublin has been central to planning and transport strategy for the Greater Dublin Area (GDA) for over 20 years. The proposed MetroLink project has evolved from previous proposals in response to the development of planning and transport policy and to address the challenges that face Dublin and Ireland today and into the future.

Solution

Our Advance Works Design programme will facilitate the timely implementation of the advance works, preparing the site for the main tunnel and railway construction, including utility diversions, archaeological and heritage works, facilitation of land access, site clearance, demolitions and environmental monitoring.

Benefits

  • 16 new stations
  • 18.8km route
  • 53 million estimated annual passengers
  • Trains every 3 minutes during peak periods
