Delivering a Bespoke Lift Design for Historic Maughan Library, King’s College London

Façade of Maughan Library, Kings College London, a grand 19th-century neo-Gothic building

Tetra Tech delivered a new compliant lift design for the Grade II listed Maughan Library while preserving heritage features.

Our multi-disciplinary team supported this bespoke yet challenging project, delivering a compliant, new replacement lift design while protecting the heritage of the remarkable Grade II listed building.

Our solution complied with BS EN 81-73 which applies to new passenger lifts and goods passenger lifts with all types of drives, emphasising the safety rules and behaviour in a fire.

Challenge

As a Grade II listed and existing building, these constraints and complexities required careful consideration for the design of the new lift to protect the English heritage. The electrical design for secondary supply also presented a challenge.

Solution

Our lifts team delivered the full lift specifications, with our heritage and architecture teams providing expert design support to maintain the building’s integrity and functionality. Our solution was British Standards (BS) EN81-73 compliant.

Our electrical engineering team also supported the design of the secondary supply to the existing building’s electrical network.

We delivered an end-to-end design that complied with all prevailing codes and standards while maintaining a qualitative approach to the heritage values of the building fabric and purpose, as well as ensuring King College London (KCL)’s progressive approach to their assets and users was sustained to exemplary standards.
