Tetra Tech’s Pete Mathieson shares how occupational health protects worker wellbeing, reduces absence and risk, and delivers cost‑effective services.
How we view occupational health
Occupational health is here to improve the mental and physical well-being of employees by monitoring the health of each worker. It provides services that will help to keep employees healthy and safe whilst at work and manage any risks in the workplace that are likely to give rise to work-related ill health.
At times, organisations feel occupational health is an added cost rather than an investment, failing to see the benefits of the long-term benefits associated with a safe work environment. And it’s natural to have some resistance to change. Often, employers may not fully understand or appreciate the importance of occupational health when in fact, a strong health and safety programme been proven to improve employee morale and productivity.
How occupational health makes a difference
At Tetra Tech, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of every worker. We all take great pride in our work, striving to ensure that every employee seen receives the utmost care and consideration from the initial screening medical to the final. We provide expert advice and guidance to employers to provide them with the right information and clinical guidance to ensure that all staff members are afforded a safe working environment.
The services we offer include face fit testing, safety critical fit for work medicals, health surveillance medicals, spirometry, audiology, drug and alcohol testing, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome screening, and skin assessments.
By utilising the vast experience and robust procedures within our team, we are helping each individual we assess improve their health and lifestyle. Many people we’ve worked with have thanked our technicians for the advice they provided to help with a quick diagnosis, which in many cases prevented serious illnesses or conditions that would have reduced their quality of life.
The quality of our service
At Tetra Tech, we believe in carrying out the best possible service for all our clients. We all take pride in our work and make great efforts to ensure that the client receives the correct service needed for each employee that we see. We take pride in providing a “gold” standard in health care focusing on the quality of service provided.
All the team are self-motivated and have a passion for people’s safety and wellbeing. We must be approachable with a friendly demure as often you will need to relax the person you are screening. Utilising an empathetic approach to our clients helps put them at easy and receive the best possible service.
Our passion for occupational health
Occupational health should aim to promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental, and social wellbeing of workers in all occupations. It should prevent workers from feeling they need to leave an organisation due to their working conditions and should protect them from health risks.
One of the best lessons I have learned within this occupation is trusting the team around me. They are there to support me when I need advice and assistance. We have an amazing relationship between the technicians and nurses, and we are always willing and eager to support each other in any way we can.
We each have a vast wealth of knowledge to draw on and we use this daily for the betterment of the employee and to help our department be efficient and ultimately provide an exceptional service for clients.
