Working with clients around the world, Tetra Tech brings stakeholders together to develop, implement, and evaluate policies and practices that improve natural resource management. We focus on developing socially equitable economic incentives to help communities and enterprises flourish while ensuring sustainable natural resource use and the biodiversity conservation.

Effective governance is at the heart of all of Tetra Tech’s project activities. We work with host countries, civil society, and the private sector to develop local organizational capacity, market linkages, improved products, and effective governance.

Climate Change Adaptation

Tetra Tech assists countries and communities to respond to the impacts of climate change through climate change adaptation planning. Our services include conducting climate vulnerability assessments, developing models for different climatic scenarios, running options analyses, and facilitating decision-making processes based on science-driven scenarios.

We lead this vulnerability assessment process at multiple levels—from local to national—and across different sectors. We then assist communities and multiple levels of government to more effectively respond to short-term and long-term effects based on comprehensive social, environmental, and economic data. Based on experience from the African and Latin American Resilience to Climate Change Program, Tetra Tech has helped the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) integrate adaptation assessments and planning into a range of agriculture, natural resource management, health, tourism, infrastructure, and democracy and governance programming.

Forest Management and Forest Carbon Mitigation REDD+

Tetra Tech is a leader in providing integrated forest management and services related to the United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation in Developing Countries Program (REDD+) services. Our work spans the realm of technical, governance, and cultural challenges facing REDD+ implementation, including social and environmental safeguards; sustainable carbon financing and payment for environmental services; multi-sectoral and low emission strategy development; and carbon stock monitoring, reporting, and verification. 

Tetra Tech provides rigor in its social and environmental analysis, undertaking gender assessments and poverty surveys to ensure that rights and benefits are equitably distributed and using best practices in remote sensing and community-based monitoring to quantify carbon emissions. Tetra Tech implements USAID’s Forest Carbon, Markets and Communities program to build the capacity of its global offices, missions overseas, and partner governments to effectively engage in local, national, and international REDD+ processes. Tetra Tech implements USAID’s flagship REDD+ and forest management programs in Indonesia, Liberia, and India, and also provides leadership on forest governance in Zambia and Bangladesh. Each of these activities is advancing global lessons on scaling up forest carbon interventions.

Biodiversity Conservation and Management

Tetra Tech has tested and applied models for biodiversity conservation and income generation within protected areas and community-managed landscapes. Tetra Tech’s approaches are based on creating dialogue and reducing conflict around management of biodiversity. Efforts are focused on reducing the trafficking of illegal wildlife. Tetra Tech works with partners to employ both technological and governance solutions to address the illegal wildlife trade, linking these activities to sustainable management of biodiversity in the wild. Through the USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership, Tetra Tech is working to develop and implement an electronic catch documentation and traceability system that will reduce illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The system uses an ecosystem approach to enhanced fisheries management, as well as human welfare interventions that address labor rights and gender inequalities in the fisheries sector.

Coastal Zone Management and Fisheries

As vulnerable coastal populations compete with international fisheries fleets for increasingly scarce marine resources, Tetra Tech is providing policy and capacity support alongside technology that empowers local communities to monitor and enforce coastal activities. In the Philippines, Tetra Tech is partnering with Microsoft through a public-private partnership that increases the use of mobile data collection on fish landings for adaptive and sustainable harvest management. Tetra Tech’s scientists and governance experts ensure that rigorous ecological assessments are linked to a deep socio-economic understanding of governance contexts to develop and implement management plans. Through the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), Tetra Tech facilitated the integration of USAID investments to national and international implementing partners from a regional CTI hub in Thailand. 

Watershed Resources and Watershed Management

Tetra Tech supports holistic watershed management approaches that link climate change adaptation and mitigation, trans-boundary resource management, biodiversity conservation, habitat management, and effective governance. With a focus on low-emission development strategies, Tetra Tech’s support to the Huila Province of Colombia has led to a watershed-based, low-emission land-use planning process that is being replicated beyond the province. In East Africa, Tetra Tech has supported the Lake Victoria Basin Commission and the East African Community to coordinate their engagement with the five countries surrounding Lake Victoria around watershed management and to build national and intergovernmental capacity.
