Interconnectors and Transmission Assets
Tetra Tech teams support the development of complex interconnector and transmission asset infrastructure projects, on and offshore.
Connection to the power grid is a vital part of offshore renewable development. Interconnection takes a big step further, offering the potential for cross-boundary energy sharing. Interconnectors and Offshore Hybrid Assets (OHAs) allow for the trading and sharing of power between countries, as well as managing high demand. Connections could happen between clusters of offshore wind farms, or countries seeking greater energy security and reliability.
Interconnection projects will need suitable infrastructure onshore and offshore, including substations, subsea cables, landfall works, and other transmission assets. Our experts have deep experience in supporting these types of projects. Our teams also support transmission, grid connection, telecommunications, and other subsea cabling.
About us
Our team has wide-ranging experience supporting interconnector and transmission projects. We provide holistic on- and offshore expertise and consult on cross-boundary, cross-jurisdiction projects where there is more than one consenting regime.
We are involved in designing the whole transmission asset, taking a strategic view of site selection, permitting, design, and compliance. Our projects have tackled the challenges associated with making landfall and we have worked on projects passing through sensitive offshore areas including Designated Sites.
We have also supported the full range of developer types: renewables developers, interconnector developers, and transmission operators such as Ossian Offshore Wind Limited, Transmission Investment, and National Grid.
LirIC Interconnector Project
Project aim: To develop a new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) sub-sea electricity interconnector between the Belfast region in Northern Ireland and the Ayrshire region in Scotland.
Developer type: Interconnector developer
Project location: Scotland and Northern Ireland, Irish Sea.
Our role: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Lead/Consents–offshore and onshore, consulting on the full range of required technical topics to support the consent application.

Ossian Offshore Wind Farm Transmission Infrastructure
Project aim: To develop high-voltage direct current (HVDC) export cables from the offshore substation platforms to landfall on the Lincolnshire coast. Onshore transmission infrastructure includes onshore HVDC cables, and onshore converter stations.
Developer type: Renewables developer
Project location: Floating offshore wind farm located in the North Sea, about 80-84 km off the east coast of Scotland with landfall in Lincolnshire, England.
Our role: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Lead/Consents–offshore and onshore, consulting on the full range of required technical topics to support the consent application.

Morgan and Morecambe Offshore Wind Farms: Transmission Assets
Project aim: To develop transmission assets associated with the Morgan Offshore Wind Project and the Morecambe Offshore Windfarm including: offshore export cables, onshore landfall infrastructure, onshore export cables, onshore substations, onshore grid connection cables and circuit breaker compounds, and other related onshore infrastructure.
Developer type: Renewables developer
Project location: Offshore in the Irish Sea, approximately 20-30 km from the Lancashire coast, and onshore in North-West England.
Our role: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Lead/Consents–offshore and onshore, consulting on the full range of required technical topics to support the consent application.

Morocco-UK Power Project
Project aim: A proposed 4,000 km high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable to carry solar and wind-generated electricity from Morocco to the United Kingdom.
Developer type: Renewables developer
Project location: Tan-Tan in southern Morocco to National Grid connection points at Alverdiscott near the north coast of Devon, England, passing through Spain, Portugal and France.
Our role: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Lead/Consents–onshore, consulting on the full range of required technical topics to support the consent application.
