Marine Consent Compliance for Coastal and Offshore Development

Black-legged kittiwake in flight

Our specialist team helps clients fulfill the conditions of marine development consent, drawing on 20 years’ experience in marine licensing.

Reaching consent is a major milestone and an exciting achievement, but this leads to the next challenge – fulfilling a wide array of consent conditions and requirements. This is serious business: non-compliance can come with project, corporate and even personal risks. The swathe of consent conditions can be vast, multi-faceted and potentially overwhelming.

Managing compliance effectively requires a combination of specialist knowledge, planning, attention to detail, and agility.

Marine Consent Compliance

Associate Director Kevin O’Connell is part of a team that has provided environmental compliance services to the offshore energy sector since 2004. If you are looking for a primer on this topic, read Kevin’s article here. It provides examples from offshore wind, but many of these apply to other industries. Dates for your diary: when to consider environmental compliance

Compliance activities need to happen during the pre-construction, construction, operations and maintenance (O&M), and decommissioning stages. We advise clients to start thinking about compliance much earlier (ideally during the pre-application phase), to establish a robust system that delivers consistency throughout the life of the project and to avoid last-minute pressure on the project, its successful delivery to programme and budget, and its stakeholders.

We don’t just deliver the minimum level of compliance—we deliver what’s right for the project and the environment.

Leveraging technology

Unfortunately, compliance isn’t just a “one and done” activity. To support ongoing compliance management, you’ll need access to accurate, current project records. This will also help your team anticipate compliance risks.

Technology can help you streamline—and stay in control of—evidence gathering and record-keeping. Our team uses a number of secure, robust in-house compliance software tools such as myProjects. We have also created specialist platforms for our clients with a specific focus on their environmental compliance needs.
