Tetra Tech developed a Net Zero carbon strategy and provided ongoing sustainability consulting to support Gripple’s transition and corporate reporting toward a Net Zero future.
The UK is committed to a trajectory which results in Net Zero emissions no later than 2050. This sets a pathway to limit the UK’s contributions to global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Companies are starting to recognise the scale of the challenge this poses, and the value of their role in limiting global temperature rises.
Gripple have committed to this economy-wide emissions reduction through setting themselves robust carbon targets with the future goal to ensure their operations are Net Zero. We were commissioned to support Gripple with their Net Zero journey and wider corporate sustainability reporting.
Challenge
Gripple had the intention of setting the ambitious commitment to target Net Zero with no prior experience in emissions reductions strategies or internal resource to plan and guide any reductions. They required external expertise to advise on suitable timeframes to reach their target, model reduction opportunities, and track progress.
We have been working with Gripple since 2020 as expert third-party sustainability consultants providing support and guidance on greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting, which is the foundation for developing a Net Zero Carbon (NZC) strategy, and then to progress the development and implementation of the strategy itself.
Solution
At the onset of the project, we provided a review of the existing information forming Gripple’s initial carbon footprint, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions attributed to their activities. We conducted this review to provide a level of assurance regarding the accuracy of the data, allowing Gripple to reach a position to set targets and a supporting road map to NZC.
We provided an initial high-level identification exercise of emissions reductions opportunities, including analysis of potential constraints and opportunities for Gripple, allowing them to identify, quantify, and implement opportunities across their business.
Drawing on our previous findings, we prepared a bespoke Net Zero Road Map which detailed the reduction optioneering and suitable net zero target. We also presented appropriate recommendations to form Gripple’s Net Zero Strategy.
We continue to provide ongoing support to Gripple in GHG reporting and guiding their progress towards the NZC target. In 2022, this included a review of the quality of Gripple’s annual emissions reporting, assessment of their progress towards their targets, including comparison to their peer groups and relevant sector guidance regarding decarbonisation, and preparation of their first taskforce for climate related financial disclosure (TCFD) aligned reporting.
We are currently exploring further opportunities to support Gripple, including undertaking detailed scenario analysis to model and mitigate transitional and physical risks and opportunities from climate change, as well as certification of their carbon neutral progress in line with PAS 2060.
