SC Johnson Headquarters, Fortaleza Hall and the Commons
Tetra Tech’s High Performance Buildings Group provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and fire protection services for Fortaleza Hall (LEED Gold-certified) and the Community Building, a 70,000-square-foot facility on the historic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed campus of SC Johnson.
- Size: 70,000 square feet

- Architect: Foster + Partners/Epstein
- Contractor: Holder Construction
- Completion Date: 2010
The connected buildings include exhibition space, a new employee dining facility, and additional employee amenities such as a fitness center, store, bank, and coffee shop. The exhibition area commemorates an expedition Sam Johnson made to Brazil in 1998 and features the airplane he used, which is a replica of the plane H.F. Johnson used in the 1930s to research carnauba wax trees in Brazil. Tetra Tech coordinated the selection of devices/equipment for public areas to blend seamlessly with the museum architecture. The exhibition area is served by a custom-designed underfloor air system that uses displacement ventilation to provide optimal occupant comfort without interrupting the architecture. Fortaleza Hall and the attached Community Building are linked by a glazed atrium and lift lobby, which connect via an undercroft to the matrix of tunnels that form the principal communications network through the campus.
