Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development
Tetra Tech supports innovative approaches to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy for the agricultural sector in low-income countries.
Expanding access to clean energy in low-income countries is a key component of global development efforts in addressing energy poverty, food insecurity, and economic growth. Significant barriers exist, hindering the integration of clean energy technology in agricultural development. Likewise, clean energy enterprises seeking to serve these farmers face several barriers. To address barriers to prosperity, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Sweden, the Government of Germany, Duke Energy Corporation, and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation jointly launched Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development in 2012.
Tetra Tech supports USAID and its partners in the administration of Powering Agriculture, a program supporting the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agricultural productivity and stimulate low-carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries, helping end extreme poverty and hunger. Powering Agriculture provides innovation grants to support projects in the design, pilot, and deployment of clean energy solutions at different points along the agricultural production cycle. The recipients of these grants are referred to as innovators.
Tetra Tech provides technical assistance to 24 innovators that have received funding through Powering Agriculture to design, pilot, and deploy clean energy solutions along the agricultural production cycle. Tetra Tech guides these innovators on clean energy technology development and field deployment, providing tailored business acceleration support to innovators on business technology development, investment facilitation, and market partnerships.
Tetra Tech conducts site visits and assessments to verify project performance and validate performance indicator data. From the information gathered through innovator activities, Tetra Tech develops technical studies and other pieces to promote findings at the clean energy/agriculture nexus. In addition to promoting these technical findings, Tetra Tech undertakes outreach activities to publicize the success of the program and lessons learned.
Program innovators are advised to comply with USAID policies and procedures, including environmental compliance, gender integration, and monitoring and evaluation. To support compliance, Tetra Tech assists USAID with reviewing innovator milestones and progress reports. The program also supports USAID’s Powering Agriculture procurements by providing an online application platform, organizing the technical evaluation committee, assisting with the onboarding of new innovators, and supporting the onboarding and activities of the two entities that comprise the financing facility partnerships.
