Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios
Tetra Tech’s High Performance Buildings Group contributed essential design services for a purpose-built integrated media production facility for international film and television productions in Iskandar, South Johor, Malaysia.
Facts
- Size: 100,000 square feet of filming stages and 24,000 square feet of TV studios, offices, workshops, and post facilities
- Construction Cost: AUD$200 million (USD$135 million)
- Client/Owner: Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios
- Architect: GDP Architects
- Contractor: Lendlease
- Completion Date: 2013
The 50-acre site includes two television studios designed to a noise rating of NR25, five film stages, technical block, audio and video post-production rooms, a dubbing theater, and supporting facilities such as workshops, dressing rooms, production offices, cafeteria, and cinema.
The project represents a significant opportunity for the Malaysian government, with Malaysia’s film development organization Finas intending to transform Malaysia into a destination for filmmakers worldwide, aiming to bring in $1 billion a year and create some 10,000 jobs by 2020.
The complex features 100,000 square feet of filming stages, and 24,000 square feet of TV studios, offices, workshops, and post-filming facilities. The services in these areas need to be reliable and adaptable to the variety of configurations of the soundstages, while also avoiding intruding on the visual, acoustic or vibrational isolation of the recording areas. To meet the operational requirements, a central energy plant is incorporated, consisting of high voltage backup generation, centralized chilled water systems, and rainwater harvesting. This provides a reliable energy system with the capacity to continue operations in the event of a loss of grid power, as well as improving the sustainability credentials of the project.
Tetra Tech was engaged as the mechanical, electrical, communications, security, dry and wet fire, plumbing, vertical transportation, and architectural lighting consultants for the project.
