While it’s only two hours away from Miami, Haiti has the lowest coverage of electricity in the western hemisphere, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). This lack of electricity can be fatal in medical situations due to lack of light and the loss of working machines, making it near impossible to provide proper care. Tetra Tech is supporting the USAID Improve Health Facility Infrastructure (IHFI) project.

This project aims to provide sustainable energy services to improve technology and institutional development in the more than 25 health care facilities throughout Haiti. New power systems were built around battery banks that can account for no or unreliable electricity and systems were rewired to correct previous deficiencies. To ensure the sustainability of these systems, a strong emphasis was placed on providing hospital technicians the knowledge to make sure systems were properly installed, operated, and maintained.
