Biogas and Landfill Gas

Tetra Tech designs, builds, and operates landfill gas (LFG) collection and control systems for some of the largest municipalities and landfill operators in North America.

We provide a wide range of biogas collection, control, and beneficial reuse services to solid waste companies, municipalities, project developers, and others involved in producing or using biogas, or methane produced by decomposing organic waste materials. We focus on our clients’ bottom line by finding new ways to turn available waste resources into bioenergy for electricity, vehicle fuel, and other energy needs.

Tetra Tech has completed more than 300 LFG and biogas projects throughout the United States, including design and installation of LFG collection and control systems, and operation and maintenance services for LFG-to-energy facilities. Our focus is matching project needs with maximized returns from existing landfill or brownfield sites.

Tetra Tech uses its experience to help clients take advantage of exciting new technologies to produce economical energy sources that promote U.S. energy independence, whether using biogas for electricity, pipeline, direct use, or vehicle fuel projects, or for solar-powered landfill cover systems. Our staff skillfully formulates the most effective plan for incorporating biogas collection and control systems into a facility and developing the appropriate reuse of the biogas, which can include generating electricity, producing heat, or selling to third parties. We developed BioCNG™, a patent-pending biogas conditioning system that economically produces an alternative vehicle fuel. The system converts biogas into renewable natural gas (RNG) biogas-based fuel to power compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

BioCNG provides a simple technology for private industries and municipalities to use in producing their own vehicle fuel at a fraction of the cost of gasoline or diesel for similar or better engine performance. Biogas-based CNG can be produced from landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and agricultural and food waste anaerobic digesters. The fuel can be used in a wide variety of vehicles manufactured or converted to use CNG vehicle fuel.

We also provide services in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction credit evaluations, including designing systems and facilities that help communities meet GHG reduction requirements and assisting clients in preparing for federal mandatory GHG emissions reporting.
