As the waste management industry evolves, Tetra Tech is supporting municipal solid waste (MSW) agencies in evaluating their options to sustainably manage their landfill operations. In an article in Waste Dive, Robert Sochovka of Cornerstone, A Tetra Tech Company, discusses the industry’s current challenges and future direction related to operational efficiency, waste diversion, waste-to-energy programs, and changing regulatory requirements.

Mr. Sochovka discusses cost-effective and efficient ways to increase landfill density and compaction, including recirculating leachate; employing modified slopes, as authorized by Settlement Accommodation Plans; using temporary cap systems; and monitoring equipment efficiency using GPS.

The article also addresses issues related to implementing local and federal waste diversion and zero waste goals and requirements; waste-to-energy program concepts to convert either solid waste or landfill gas (LFG) into a usable fuel source; and regulations related to interstate waste transportation and new source performance standards (NSPS) and emission guidelines (EG).
