Tetra Tech developed the award-winning design for reconstructing Suffolk County Community College’s Veteran’s Plaza in New York. The scope of work for this memorial plaza included the architectural re-design of building entryways and the incorporation of a memorial clock tower and fountains, as well as plantings, landscaping, and pedestrian circulation.

The plan, titled “It’s Time to Remember,” represents a process of discovering, revealing, and creating a new functional space. The veterans concept manifests itself physically through a series of strategically placed physical elements, including the Memorial Clock Tower, the Memorial Timeline Walk, and the Eagle Memorial Fountain.

Pedestrian walks throughout the site are based on a hierarchical system with varying widths and materials. In adjacent areas, landscape plantings were installed in specific locations to define and order the outdoor space. Existing site lighting was removed and new fixture styles were added to complement both the design intent as well as existing architectural elements.

To strengthen the Huntington Library’s presence on the quadrangle, a new grand staircase, ramps, and stacked planters with reflecting pools were added. The Smithtown Science building entry terrace was renovated to include new seat wall planters, a quadrangle viewing platform, and flag poles. Improvements at the Riverhead Building included re-facing the pedestrian bridge and reusing the existing terraces as a venue for the Veterans Memorial Timeline Walk.
