Wind Energy

Renewable Energy

Tetra Tech serves more than 40 renewable energy companies and utilities in their efforts to bring a new, sustainable energy future to reality.

From environmental services for offshore wind development in Delaware to constructing major commercial wind developments in Wyoming, Tetra Tech is the only firm in the United States that provides all of the environmental, engineering, and construction services to all of the phases of a wind project: development, construction, and operation and maintenance.

Tetra Tech’s strong balance sheet and commitment to helping our clients plan, design, build, and operate efficient and economic wind energy facilities has never been more important than in today’s trying economic times. Tetra Tech is a financially strong company with the assets to stand behind our work, giving our clients and their lenders certainty. Our project approach has always been geared toward planning and designing projects that are cost-efficient to build and operate.

In this new era, investors are more discriminating, and they are looking harder at construction and operating costs, as well as the overall energy production of wind energy facilities. Tetra Tech already has an excellent reputation in the wind energy community for keeping construction cost and energy production considerations front and center in every phase of our support of the project life cycle.

Since the late 1990s, Tetra Tech has expanded its service offerings in the wind market, from environmental siting and permitting to full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and operations support of wind energy generating facilities.

Tetra Tech provides these services in an integrated, value-added way. We understand that decisions made in the development stage can substantially impact the cost of construction and the efficiency of operations. By choosing Tetra Tech, our clients and their lenders are secure in the knowledge that their investment is supported by a firm that understands their key interests.

Tetra Tech has worked on or is currently providing construction services to clients on 18 construction projects totaling more than 1,500 MW of wind energy.

Tetra Tech is considered the #1 provider of front-end services to the U.S. wind industry.

  • Providing support to the top wind power project developers and owners in the United States

  • Experience with more than 200 wind projects in 34 states across the United States, totaling more than 15,000 MW

  • Worked on more than 12,000 MW of wind generation that is either in operation or scheduled for construction

Several years ago, Tetra Tech's subsidiary, The Delaney Group, performed the civil construction work at the Maple Ridge Wind Farm. This 195-turbine project in New York (the largest U.S. wind farm east of the Mississippi) stands as an example for states looking to take renewable energy initiatives into their own hands.

Our long-standing knowledge of the energy market and number of skilled wind experts have put Tetra Tech in the public eye on another level as well. In 2008, Tetra Tech teamed with law firm Nixon Peabody to develop the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) siting guide. This online handbook serves as a siting guidance tool for the wind energy industry, including developers, regulatory agencies, and other interested parties.

In November 2008, AWEA selected Tetra Tech to facilitate the evaluation of a proposed whooping crane habitat conservation plan. The whooping crane, protected by the Endangered Species Act, migrates from Canada to Texas along a corridor that is ideal for wind energy development. No whooping cranes have been killed by wind turbines, as they typically fly above the reach of the blades, but AWEA and Tetra Tech are committed to minimizing the impact of wind energy on wildlife and habitats wherever possible.

Tetra Tech is currently executing several large turn-key wind energy projects with PacifiCorp (view February, July, and October 2008 press releases). Tetra Tech is providing EPC and balance of plant construction services for sites in Wyoming, Oklahoma, New York, and Alaska. These projects will have the combined capacity of more than 578 MW.

Wind clients include:

These are just a few of the larger projects Tetra Tech is working on. In fact, we have more than 100 active wind projects across the country right now. The company is also active in the emerging offshore wind energy market, with several projects for preliminary siting already underway. We are completing the initial phases our first international wind projects, as well.

With concerns about climate change on the rise, and a strong and growing desire to ensure the United States’ energy independence, Tetra Tech’s experts are planning, designing, and constructing wind projects that embrace new technologies and deliver renewable energy to people worldwide.
