Troutdale Smelter Remediation |

The Troutdale Smelter was built for the war effort in 1941 and was the seventh largest aluminum smelter in the Northwest. But age and environmental hazards dictated the demolition of the plant and the restoration of its surrounding environment.
As prime contractor, Tetra Tech was responsible for restoring 25 acres of previously contaminated property. Tetra Tech handled 700,000 square feet of roofing/siding contaminated with asbestos-containing materials and PCBs, 33,997 tons of steel, 11,793 gallons of used oil, and 338 tons of asbestos. Tetra Tech also furnished all construction management, engineering, design, supervision, labor, materials, employee training, tools, equipment, unloading, loading, hauling, taxes, insurance to perform all demolition activities required for the complete removal, transport, and disposal of all facilities and materials at the plant.
After demolition of all above-ground structures as well as foundations and pipes to a depth of eight feet, Tetra Tech removed contaminated soil and backfilled and graded the site in preparation for the new owner, who will begin redevelopment for light industrial operations.
Highlights:
- Steel beams were decontaminated for recycling instead of sent for hazardous waste disposal
- More than 325,000 hours worked without a lost work day
