Rocky Mountain Arsenal Remediation

Creating one of the Nation's Largest Urban Wildlife Refuges

Rocky Mountain Arsenal Remediation

During World War II, this 27-square-mile chemical weapons facility was critical to our nation’s defense. Years later, portions of the historic site were left contaminated due to accepted disposal practices from half a century ago—presenting a complex challenge for Tetra Tech scientists and engineers.

Tetra Tech holds the Program Management Contract (PMC) for this $1.2 billion cleanup effort. Since 1997, we have been assigned 259 Consent-Decree driven task orders to remediate the arsenal. The site includes approximately 6.8 million yards of contaminated soils/sediments, 15 groundwater plumes, and nearly 400 structures. As PMC, we have awarded over 200 competitively bid subcontracts and provided oversight for over 13 million cubic yards of earth moving, hazardous waste landfill design, and public involvement/regulatory support. Most notable is the accomplishment of over 4,000,000 hours worked without a lost time incident and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program Star Status—the first environmental cleanup site so recognized by OSHA.

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) National Wildlife Refuge is just 10 miles northeast of downtown Denver, Colorado. It is home to more than 330 species of animals, including wild bison, deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, bald eagles, and burrowing owls. The refuge, currently occupying 12,000 acres, is the result of one of the nation’s largest and most challenging environmental cleanup projects.

Highlights:

  • Received OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program Star Status for excellent health and safety performance
  • Achieved excellent Small Business participation using a multi-faceted, proactive subcontracting approach which has been formally recognized by both the U.S. Army and the Small Business Administration
