Amber H.
Civil Engineer I
Q: How did you end up at Tetra Tech?
A: One year after my college graduation I decided my position with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation wasn’t giving me the experience I desired. I placed my resume online and received numerous responses. During the interview process, however, Tetra Tech Rizzo was the only company that demonstrated a sincere interest in me professionally. The manager I first met talked with me about the importance of mentoring me as I developed as an engineer. The other interviewers were passionate about their work in our federal group and each shared with me that they were looking for the right person for this position, not simply someone to fill a space. This level of interest left me realizing this is the company for me.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: Right now I’m working on foundation designs for a U.S. Military project in Iraq—our team is building overhead protective coverage systems for high-occupancy buildings on military bases and embassies in Iraq. My primary interest is in bridge design so I’ve also worked on bridge modifications, bridge weight limit studies, and on a tower analysis for Cingular. I find I enjoy all of the design work I’m doing because it’s genuinely challenging.
Q: Describe your work environment.
A: Because I’m the youngest member of my group I could easily feel intimidated by the talent and knowledge of my co-workers. Yet they readily stop what they’re doing to help me understand any specific work I’m attempting, and at any time. Everyone in the federal group is interested in my career success and this really excites me. And my operating unit appreciates the hard work we all perform and we know it—there are annual picnics and parties plus monthly lunches for everyone where learn about our successes and new initiatives.
Q: What do you like best about your career?
A: Civil Engineering is a very rewarding career for me because I enjoy working with other engineers to create a better place for all of us. The roads, bridges, and infrastructure engineers design are meant for everyone—for our use, enjoyment, appreciation and protection, and without limitation. This excites me and gets me engaged every day. I’m very pleased to be part of a company that shares my enthusiasm.
