Southfield Development

Multi-phased services for a mixed-used development at a former Naval air station

Tetra Tech has provided full architecture and engineering services including transportation planning, environmental permitting, and infrastructure design for the redevelopment of the 1,450 acre South Weymouth Naval Air Station in Massachusetts. The former airfield has found new life as the Southfield master planned community that includes approximately 2,850 residential units, two million square feet of commercial/industrial space, an 18-hole golf course, and recreational facilities.

Southfield Smart Growth Development

The backbone of the $750-million project is a 2.5-mile cross-base parkway that will serve as an arterial between Route 18 and Route 3. Tetra Tech analyzed alternative alignments of the parkway and completed preliminary design of the preferred alternative.

Multidisciplinary services provided for this "smart growth" redevelopment project include:

  • Development of traffic operational analyses encompassing six towns, more than 65 intersections, and more than 20 roadway links
  • Analysis of the South Weymouth Commuter Rail Station and future transit demands
  • Design of two traffic signals and five signal modifications, four bridges, two multi-lane modern roundabouts, and a shared-use path
  • Completion of design/build documents for the parkway
  • Expedited environmental review and permitting
  • Hazardous materials management
  • Water supply analysis and design
